We Celebrate More Birthdays- The American Cancer Society- Winthrop University Relay for Life

The Fight for more Birthdays

By: Shakora Bamberg

On April 19th, 2013 Winthrop University hosted the Relay for Life inside the Lois Rhame West Center from 5 p.m.-5 a.m. in support of the American Cancer Society

“The purpose of Relay for Life at Winthrop University is to raise awareness and money for The American Cancer Society,” according to Stephanie Smith, the Winthrop University’s Relay for Life advisor.

“Relay for life helps people remember their loved ones, celebrate and fight back,” Smith said. Smith and a group of students has planned and prepared for this event since September by meeting twice a month.

They hosted a Relay for Life kick off rally back in September 2012. Relay for Life was originally scheduled to take place on Campus Green lawn but due to weather changes it was moved to the West Center.

The changes in the weather did not change the attitudes of those who participated in the event. Sade’ Williams, team development chair, of Winthrop’s Relay for life Chapter greeted guest with a welcome speech and the purpose of the event.

“I relay because I loss my mom to cancer and so I do this to honor her,” says Williams. Volunteers and students were holding conversations, eating food and participating in the different games and activities.

Spirits were definitely high as students worked cohesively with their respective organizations to fund-raise and participate. Some of the organizations featured were Council of Student Leaders, Serving others and Reflecting (SOAR) and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority were involved.

Around ten p.m. the luminary ceremony started. The Luminaria Ceremony occurs at this time at every Relay For Life event. Luminaria bags are transformed and illuminated after dark at every local Relay For Life event.

Candles were placed in luminary bags that were purchased in the names of cancer victims. Each luminaria candle represents a person affected by cancer. The event was over at 4:30 a.m. as most teams began to leave.

Participants began to clean up within the West Center and the student leaders and Ms. Smith thanked everyone who participated.

The event was very successful with a total number of 28 teams, 307 participants and a fundraising amount of $18,346. 17.

My original Vox op

February 27, 2013

If you could be any cartoon character which would you prefer? This was my introductory question of which I asked about 10-12 students here at Winthrop what cartoon character they would prefer based on their preference. Some took seconds to ponder their favorite character, some talked about cartoons that were similar to them as children others just reflected on some of their favorite television shows growing up. I really enjoyed working on this project because it gave me a perspective to figure out what type of cartoon characters they often admired from when they grew up.
